Faux-zagna

So Finally Faux-zagna!!  

This one is super easy and takes almost no time. My kids love this one!    

First, you need to make a Bolognese sauce.   It’s really easy and you can make it easier by buying pre-chopped vegetables.  

This week, Giant has ground beef for $1.88/ pound or ground turkey for $2.99/ 20 ounce package. They also have certain vegetables on sale as a 10 for 10 special. Giant also has the frozen ravioli for less than $6 for 20 ounces, according to the store circular.  

Acme has ground beef on their 4 for $20 sale, so that would be about $5 for the ground beef.

I use frozen ravioli and cook it first while I make the sauce. The sauce takes very little time. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  

Here’s what you’ll need:

 1/2 cup carrots, chopped

1/2 cup celery, chopped

1 small yellow onion

2 cloves of garlic, crushed

Pinch of red pepper flakes (or not if you don’t like spicy, this just adds some flavor)

2 pounds ground beef or turkey

 

1 16 ounce can of crushed tomato purée Salt and pepper.

 Ravioli

1 20 ounce package of shredded mozzarella cheese.  

Start sautéing the carrots, add the celery, onions, and finally the garlic. Cook until soft. Add the beef or turkey, season with salt and pepper, and add the pepper flakes if you’re using them.   When the beef is cooked, about ten minutes, but probably less, add the tomatoes after draining the liquid from the meat. Cook for a few more minutes.  

If you started the ravioli, and I hope you did, it should be done by now. Layer the sauce, ravioli, and cheese. Bake until the cheese has melted.

It’s like lasagna, only different. It’s easy and it doesn’t take long.   The Bolognese is very versatile so I double the recipe and freeze it. I hope you all enjoy it. It’s a good one for parties, kids like it, and you can really prepare it ahead easily.  It costs around $10, so it’s a bargain!    

PS. if you wanna go a little crazy, add sausage. It’s just a nice little difference. If this is “crazy” to you, I hope you find time to get out more in the New Year. 🙂
